About our hand dyed Hemp fabrics
Available in natural and our hand dyed with low impact, vibrant procion colors.
We use high quality hemp and hemp blend fabrics in small custom dye lots. Dyeing is a chemical reaction, based on many factors. It can be extremely difficult, but it can also be entirely fun! It takes a lot of time, muscles, science, math, and above all patience. Ian's work is top quality and we know that you'll LOVE the fabrics and colors!

We use Procion Fiber Reactive dyes for our hand-dyed hemp fabrics.
We love procion dyes since they give long lasting, brilliant colors.
"Fiber reactive dye will not wash out since the molecules of the dye combine with the molecules of the fabric to create a permanent bond, the color becomes part of the fabric".
We pre-wash the fabric with synthrapol (mild detergent) to prepare the fabric for dyeing. Each dye bath, or dye lot, can take up to 3 hours depending on the color. We dye in small batch and colors may vary slightly from dye lot to dye lot. We set the color with a soda ash fixative. The soda ash (sodium carbonate) fixes the dye (fiber reactive which has bonded to the fabric) and sets the color. Once the color has set we wash again with synthrapol and rinse the fabric, rinsing several times before machine drying. It's a good idea to wash the fabric again separately in a cold wash and dry before you use them.
*A note about hand dyed fabrics* Our goal is to produce evenly dyed, consistent colors, but there are many factors... they dye is sold in lots and may vary from order to order, it is hand dyed (from an organic, and evolving human), and the fabrics are a blend of natural fibers which can pick up the dyes differently... all of which add to the beauty of our hand dyed hemp fabrics. We will always make mention of any imperfections in the eveness of a dye. Hand dyeing can have many looks and we pride ourselves on even, rich, dyed fabric. You'll also see in our low water immersion dyeing which has it's own look and focuses on the uneveness to the color, bringing out the highs and low within a color and giving the fabric a mottled look. Often we'll re-dye fabrics if they haven't met our top approval and you'll see these in our pre-dyeds as one of a kind fabrics.
